TPS E2 – Rebound Effects of Circular Economy Initiatives
Objective
The aim of TPS E2 on the rebound effects of circular economy initiatives is to identify the unforeseen and sometimes counter-productive consequences of circularity strategies within the various stakeholder communities.
- Ensuring the coherence and desirability of policy levers
- Promoting coherence and a holistic vision
- Assessing redistributive and undesirable effects
Examples of Research Questions and Issues
- What rebound effects can be measured or anticipated? Does recycling reduce the need to extract virgin raw materials?
- What conditions need to be met for the circular economy to deliver on its environmental promises?
- Considering social justice objectives, would certain strategies tend to marginalize groups that are already more vulnerable?
- How can we assess the risks associated with new policies, identify rebound effects and forecast their redistributive impact?
