Description
The overpredation of the grey seal is a significant factor contributing to the loss of marine biodiversity in Quebec. In this context, a significant increase in seal harvesting is necessary. In a circular economy approach, every part of a harvested animal must be valorized. The meat can be used for food (meat), the skins for making leather and furs, and the fat for extracting omega-3s. This project aims to identify valorization pathways for other parts of the seal: bones, blood, viscera, offal, and byproducts generated by omega-3 extraction. Valorization pathways in animal feed, plant fertilization, as an anti-rust agent, as a lubricant, and as a healing agent will be explored. The regulatory applicability and the connections between companies will also be evaluated. At the end of this project, the application of the valorization pathways with the greatest potential will be facilitated.
