Biography

Olivier Doutres has been a professor at the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) since 2014 and is co-founder and director of the Montreal Acoustics Research Group (GRAM). His achievements in each of the three areas of his professorial duties focus on the prevention of hearing loss and all other adverse health effects caused by exposure to noise. The common thread running through his research is a better understanding of the mechanisms of propagation, absorption, and insulation of sound waves in complex structures and acoustic (meta)materials with a view to protecting populations from noise pollution. He conducts research that combines theory and practice, generating knowledge and direct applications for workplaces, learning environments, scientific instrumentation companies, the materials industry, and the transportation industry. Professor Doutres teaches at the bachelor's and master's levels with the goal of training engineers who are skilled in noise and vibration measurement and equipping them with theoretical and experimental tools adapted to reducing these nuisances in the field. Professor Doutres is also associate editor of the European (Acta Acustica) and Canadian (Canadian Acoustics) acoustics journals.
