Description

The circular economy has emerged as a promising model for enabling sustainable development by decoupling economic growth from the consumption of finite resources. Implementing the principles of the circular economy in organizational contexts is essential to drive the large-scale transition to more sustainable production and consumption systems.

This systematic literature review provides a comprehensive overview of the adoption and implementation of circular economy principles in various organizational contexts. The research aims to explore how different types of organizations, including manufacturing companies, service providers, public sector entities and non-governmental organizations, are integrating the circular economy into their operations. It examines the factors that promote or hinder the adoption of the circular economy, analyzing technological, political, financial, cultural and social factors. Sector-specific strategies and practices are highlighted to show how the circular economy is approached in unique ways in different industrial contexts. The paper also assesses the impacts of circular economy practices on organizational performance, encompassing economic, environmental and social dimensions. Particular attention is paid to the influence of organizational size and geographical location on the effectiveness of circular economy practices. Through in-depth analysis, this study highlights the different trajectories of circular economy integration in organizations, and offers insight into the challenges and opportunities presented by this sustainable business model.

The findings contribute to a better understanding of the role of the circular economy in promoting sustainable development within organizational frameworks, and suggest directions for future research, policy development and improved practice in this evolving field.
