Biography
Martine Dubé is a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at ÉTS, where she works on the shaping and assembly of composite materials, particularly thermoplastic matrix composites, for space, aerospace and other applications. In 2020, Prof. Dubé became the holder of the Marcelle Gauvreau Research Chair in Environmentally-Friendly Composite Materials. The Chair's work focuses on three areas:
- Recycling of composites production scrap, especially carbon-fiber-based thermoplastic composites from materials manufacturers and the aeronautics industry.
- Repair of damaged composite structures, especially thermoplastic composites used in the aeronautics industry, to extend the life of existing structures
- Recycling of fiberglass production scrap used in the wind turbine blade manufacturing industry.
In these three areas, Prof Dubé has established collaborations with composites manufacturers (Teijin, Solvay) and the wind power industry (LM Wind Power). Production scrap in various industries (aeronautics, sport, wind power) can represent 50% of the quantity required to produce the good. Prof. Dubé's work aims to valorize these scraps for use in other applications (aircraft interiors, automotive, consumer goods). The processes used in these projects range from additive manufacturing of reinforced polymers to compression or stamping molding of recycled staple-fiber composites.
Prof. Dubé is also interested in the recycling of materials sent into space (plastic packaging, for example) and the in-situ use of resources available on the Moon (regolith) for use in additive manufacturing. The latter project is supported by the Canadian Space Agency.
Prof. Dubé holds a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering from Polytechnique Montréal, as well as a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University. She spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow at École Polytechnique de Paris, then worked as an engineer at Bombardier Aerospace before joining ÉTS in 2011. She is the author of some 80 journal and conference papers on composite materials.
